Since Patricia died when both Patrick and Beth were very young, the two have little or no memories of her. Some time after her death, Patrick and Beth's aunt, Judy Goheen , ended up with Patricia's lasagna recipe. She had it laminated, and gave it to Patrick when he was in his early 20's. That recipe was the only item either Beth or Patrick had that was in their mother's handwriting.

Both Patrick and Beth wanted to find a different way to raise money for cancer research and to raise awareness of cancer issues. They decided to utilize their Mom's lasagna recipe.
